The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of James Smith can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

So many stories

There are so many stories that I can share about Jim Smith. His was a life well lived and a life of public service. In Berkeley County government circles, his name is legendary for the many, many accomplishments that he made. We have him to thank for economic development that includes Quad Graphics, the former Guardian Fiberglass, Orgill and Ecolab. He gave his whole heart and soul to make those things happen.

With the City of Martinsburg, we have Berkeley Senior Services, the War Memorial Pool and the saving of the Roundhouse complex becaue of a true spirit of cooperativeness with city officials.

His professonalism and spirit of cooperation with state, local and federal officials brought us improvements to the Airport Industrial Park, the beginnings of the buyout of Sportsman's Paradise following severe flooding and many more improvements to Berkeley County both small and large.

On the state front he served on the Regional Jail Authority and worked tirelessy to assist counties struggling with regional jail bills.

On behalf of the employees of Berkeley County who were blessed to work with him I say thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your knowledge, your kindness and your boundless energy. We wll never forget you.
