Catherine Elaine Lanning, of Gerrardstown, WV passed away peacefully on December 26, 2018 at Hospice of the Panhandle in Kearneysville, WV. Born on March 24, 1937 in Laurel, MD she was the daughter of the late James Denard Long and Lillian Elizabeth Henson Long.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John Rolland Lanning, Jr.; daughter Cynthia L. Drummond (Thomas) of Gerrardstown; son Jeffrey S. Lanning (Lynn) of Lansdale, PA; son John D. Lanning (Camie) of North Logan, UT; six grandchildren, Noah and Jennifer Drummond, Jessica, Abby, Tiffany, and David Lanning; sister Geraldine Piatt Ready of Trinity, FL; beloved nieces Catherine Baggarly, nee Piatt, and Theresa Piatt and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Curtis Piatt and beloved niece Carole Piatt.

She was a graduate of Laurel Senior High School in Laurel, MD. She assisted her parents’ store, Long’s Meat and Poultry Market on C Street in Laurel, MD. As a federal employee for over 30 years she worked at various agencies, including the State Department, the US Forest Service, The Office of Personnel Management, and the Department of Labor. In later years she worked as a medical billing technician.
She was a member of First Methodist Church in Laurel, MD and Calvary United Methodist Church in Waldorf, MD. She enjoyed visiting with her family and playing card games. Christmas was her favorite time of the year.

Service and interment at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.
