Obituary for James Wolf "Jim" Porterfield

James Wolf "Jim" Porterfield
James Wolf "Jim" Porterfield,72, of Martinsburg, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Winchester Medical Center.

Born February 14, 1944 in Martinsburg, WV he was the son of the late Burr Lewis and Virginia Wolf Porterfield.

He was a veteran of the WV Air National Guard; and a member of Norwalk Car Club.

Jim was a car enthusiast his entire life, his passion for automobiles is what inspired him to start Porterfield's Body Shop in 1968. After twenty increasingly successful years he relocated to the renamed Porterfield's Collision Center in 1988, thereby achieving his goal of operating the largest, most state of the art repair facility in the tri-state area.

He loved drag racing, having competed throughout the sixties and seventies, winning many events in his "Patriot" Corvette.

He loved building and restoring classic and custom cars and trucks. His efforts have won many awards at the national show level, including magazine covers and television appearances.

Jim rarely went anywhere that he would not be surrounded by friends. He knew someone everywhere he went. Of all of his friends, there are three that he especially valued his time with, Ronnie Butts - who helped with automotive projects; Larry Horner - who was a friend since childhood; and Bob Widmeyer - who provided good food and conversation.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry D. Goff Porterfield; a son, James Daniel Porterfield and wife, Jennifer; one daughter, Losca Lynn Whittington and husband, William III; three grandchildren, Taylor Porterfield, William Whittington, IV, Lathan Porterfield; one brother, Ronnie Porterfield and wife, Joann; and two sisters, Brenda Mullin and husband, Mike, and Sally Porterfield.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood.
