Obituary for George David Rowland

George David Rowland, age 86, of Charles Town, WV, died July 17, 2016 at the Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV. Born June 10, 1930 in Summit Point, WV, he was the son of the late Clifford and Gertrude Crim Rowland.
David attended public schools in Jefferson County and went on to receive a B.A at West Virginia University and a M.S. degree at the University of Kentucky (UK).
David was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Beadle Bumble Club, and UK Fellows.
During fifty years of endeavors preceding retirement, he worked as a farmhand, freight trucker, public library director, and as a businessman. He built the second library branch system in the nation for the State of Virginia. He, his late wife, Doris Benson Rowland, and their children created a home business named Upstart, which led to decades of providing highly imaginative library and reading promotionals to libraries and schools nationwide, and helping generations of children to love reading.
Surviving relatives include daughters, Mary Ludwig and Susan DeFelice; a son, David Benson Rowland; and grandsons Alexander Ludwig and Ronald DeFelice, III. Sisters Louise King and Barbara Glassford preceded their brother in death.
There will be no viewing or graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Summit Point Library's South Jefferson Building Fund at P. O. Box 17, Summit Point, WV, 25446.
