Obituary for Genevieve W. Monroe (Washington)

Genevieve W. Monroe, 97, of Shepherdstown, WV, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at the Canterbury Center.

Born October 17, 1918 in Jefferson County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Marstella (Stubbs) Washington.

She retired from the VA Medical Center and was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown. She was also involved with the Jefferson County Meals on Wheels Program, Good Shepherd Interfaith Caregivers in Shepherdstown, the Jefferson County Ministerial Association, and the Clerks for Blood Pressure Clinic, Willing Workers Club, was previously a Sunday school teacher, Rose Hill Cemetery Board, and lifetime member of NAACP.

She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, including, Robert A. Holmes and wife, Gloria of Atlanta, Georgia; and two sisters, Priscilla Holmes of Atlanta, Georgia and Dora B. Washington of Shepherdstown, and godchildren, Norman Monroe, Sr. of Shepherdstown, Naomi Monroe Fisher of Martinsburg, Arlene Green of Martinsburg, and Steve Holmes of Shepherdstown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Monroe; one brother, Robert Washington; and four sisters, Mary Brown, Josephine Pollard, Charity Cook and Charlotte Tucker; and a nephew, Clarence A. Washington.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev.Rudolph Bropleh officiating. Family will receive friends from 11 to 12 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Shepherdstown.
