Obituary for Portia Eileen Braithwaite

Portia Eileen Braithwaite, 94, of Martinsburg, passed away on January 14, 2015 at Somerford Place, Hagerstown, Maryland.

Born July 3, 1920 in Berkeley Springs, to Charles Franklin and Fredda Michael,
Mrs. Braithwaite was the eldest of five children. She graduated Valedictorian of the class of 1939 from Berkeley Springs High School.

On February 15, 1942, she married Charles Junior Braithwaite. Shortly after their marriage and his deployment for World War II, she moved to Martinsburg and was employed at Newton D. Baker Hospital as a medical secretary. She then went to work for the Works Progress Administration also as a secretary. In 1957, she went to work at the Berkeley County Board of Education. She eventually became head of the Finance Department and retired from that position in 1980.

She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Shenandoah Valley Chapter NSDAR and the Retired Service Personnel of Berkeley County.

She was an avid and accomplished baker whose specialties were pies and breads. She enjoyed traveling and studying languages, particularly French. However, her favorite pastime was spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, one infant brother, Kennard, and one sister, Bernice Wills.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Garnett Canby, Jr., her granddaughter and her husband Julie and James Keller, two great-granddaughters, Stella and Abigail, one brother, Glenn Michael, one sister and her husband, Wilma and Billy Lopp, and one beloved niece and her husband, Vicki and Donald Hayes.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday, January 19, 2015, at Brown Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 20th, at Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. John Yost officiating. Interment will be held at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, Maryland, 21742 or to the West Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 1601 Second Avenue, Charleston, WV 25387.
