Obituary for William Alan Schaeffer

William Alan Schaeffer, 69, of Martinsburg passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2021 at the home of his daughter, Amy and son-in-law Nathan in Morgan County. He fought a good fight with dementia and died with his family surrounding him.

Born October 3, 1951 in Madison, TN he was the son of the late Glen William and Florence Ann Murrill Schaeffer.

Alan graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1970. He then joined the 167th Air National Guard and was trained as a medic. He was employed by Martin-Marietta then ESSROC for forty years before retiring in 2014.

Alan was a life-time member of the Bedington Volunteer Fire Department where he served in multiple capacities from Board of Directors to Assistant Chief. He will be remembered as an excellent fire fighter and wonderful emergency medical technician.

Alan was raised as a Seventh-Day Adventist and attended parochial school for many years. He attended Bedington United Methodist Church with his wife the past several years.

Alan was a life-long runner and weight-lifter; affectionately known to his friends as “Big Al”.

Surviving are his wife, Rosie Schaeffer, whom he married September 2, 1973. His daughter, Amy Schaeffer Kenney and husband Nathan Kenney of Hedgesville; granddaughters, Emma Shroades Drummond and husband Tyler of Arizona, Alexandra Shroades of Hedgesville; grandson Matthew Mihalek of Hedgesville; a sister, Sharon Lee Crawford and husband, Gerald of The Villages, FL; and many brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, John Wolff.

Services will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 11:00AM at Bedington United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00AM to 11:00AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bedington United Methodist Church or Bedington Volunteer Fire Department.
