Obituary for Sallye J. Heffle (Morgan)
Sallye J. Heffle, 86, passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg.
Born on August 27, 1934 in Culpeper, VA to Joseph Robert Morgan and Virginia Masters Morgan.
She attended early schools in Culpeper VA, Baltimore MD, Berkeley Springs WV, Hedgesville and Winchester Avenue Schools in Berkeley County, and graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1953. She earned a Liberal Arts degree in 1957 from what was then Shepherd College and went on to make a career for herself in journalism, serving as the assistant women’s editor and drama critic for The Alexandria Gazette. In 1961, she started her work with what is now known as the WV Department of Health and Human Services, first serving as a child welfare worker, and then Children’s Social Services Supervisor, retiring in 1998.
Sallye led a very active life in her retirement, cherishing every moment with her three grandsons; volunteering over the years in Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Panhandle, C-CAP, and playing an active role in her church, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, where she served for over 30 years as Outreach Committee chair and co-chairperson, and public relations director.
Sallye is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rich and Mary Jane Heffle; her daughter, Patricia Cooper, all of Martinsburg; three grandsons, James P. and wife Michelle Cooper of Seattle WA, Jordan Heffle of New York, and Chase Heffle of Morgantown WV; sisters Sandra Cross and husband Bob, and Karen Morgan; brother-in-law, John Watson; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. Heffle, Sr.; sister, Ellen Watson; and sister-in-law Dorothy Katalinas.
Memorial services will be held at a future date.
