Obituary for Robert Wayne Butts

Robert Wayne Butts, “Bob”, 84, of Martinsburg passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021.

Born April 20, 1936 in Martinsburg, to the late Jack Butts and Mary Ella Brumbaugh Butts. Growing up, Bob was fortunate to have a built-in band of playmates, with three brothers and three sisters already to find some fun, sing and dance. Family was all and they remained not only family but good friends, as well. Bob graduated Saint Joseph’s high school, class of 1954.

Bob got his start in the workforce setting duckpins in the old bowling lanes of Martinsburg and sewing upholstery before joining the federal workforce. He ended his career retiring from the IRS after many years as an ALC computer programmer, finishing in IT Data Security.

He married Mary Lee Vanorsdale in 1966 and was blessed with three children, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren who filled his heart with joy.

During his journey through life, Bob was an avid sportsman playing tennis, enjoying league bowling, and hitting the links. His love for baseball’s Braves, Red Sox and Nationals ensured there was always a game on TV he had his eye on and during the fall and winter, he could be found dressed in red and gold cheering on his Redskins.

Bob was an avid reader, a master of the 2 across 4 down NY Times Crosswords and champion of the ever-frustrating Sudoku Sunday puzzles. Bob looked forward to the summer sun and 4th of July vacations at the beach with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Butts, two sons, Robert Todd Butts and wife Barbara of Martinsburg, and Michael Butts of Bunker Hill; one daughter, Wendy Beasley and husband Woody of Martinsburg; four grandchildren, Ryan Butts, John Butts, Sara Cloud and Rachel Blasco; two great grandchildren, Myia and Ryleigh Butts; a brother, Tim Butts and wife Judy of Hagerstown, MD; two sisters, Sue Taylor and husband Larry of OH, and Melissa Butts of WI; sisters-in-law Elaine Butts and Racheal Butts; brother-in-law Donald Plotner; and, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Jack Butts and Michael Butts and sister Brenda Plotner.

Family will receive friends and family on Sunday, March 28, 2021 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Browns Funeral Home.

Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 29, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Aloysius Boh celebrant.
