Obituary for Peggy V. Pownall (Stewart)
With deepest sadness and a heavy heart, we announce the passing of our mother, Peggy V. Pownall, 97, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at Berkeley Medical Center.
Born May 24, 1925 in Romney, WV, she was the daughter of the late Granville O. and Mary (Pearrell) Stewart.
She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church for 60 years. She did volunteer work for the church for many years.
She owned and operated Simpson's Confectionary for 22 years. She later owned and operated Wheatland Restaurant, before selling it and retiring in 1985.
Our mother had a passion for cooking and ministering to others through food. She touched and enriched the lives of many others throughout her entire life. Loved beyond words, she will be missed beyond measure.
She is survived by three daughters, Deborah A. Simpson of Hagerstown, MD, Peggy S. Tinsman, and Bonnie M. Mills (Barry); one son, Max H. Simpson (Marian) all of Martinsburg; one stepson, Charles Pownall, Jr. (Judy) of Deep Creek Lake, MD; three grandchildren, Daniel Tinsman, Brian Tinsman, Lisa Dehaven; three step-grandchildren, six great grandchildren; three nieces, one nephew and many great nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Max Simpson, and second husband, Charles Pownall; three sisters, Jessie Stewart and Betty Faircloth, Nancy S. Steryous; one brother, Granville O. Stewart, Jr.; and two grandsons, Adam Mills and Christian Everhart.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 11:00 am at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood with Pastor Mike Cantley from St. Luke's United Methodist Church officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the chapel.
Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Luke's United Methodist Church at 700 New York Ave. Martinsburg, WV 25401 and Pikeside United Methodist Church at 25 Paynes Ford Rd., Martinsburg, WV 25405
