Obituary for Patricia Ann "Thompson" Benner

Patricia Ann Thompson Benner, 87, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Stonerise of Berkeley Springs while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born March 13, 1936, in York, PA, she was the daughter of the late Viola Thompson Broda.

She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School class of 1954. Upon graduating from high school, she began working as a telephone operator for C & P Telephone. She left the phone company after marrying Cletus to go with him to Pensacola, Florida where he was stationed in the Navy. After returning from Florida, Pat was a stay-at-home mom until 1970. She first worked as a cook in the Berkeley Co School system at North Junior High, then moved to the Corning cafeteria where she also worked as a cook. Finally, Pat became the head cook of Meals on Wheels and worked her way up to and retired as the Director. Pat was a member of Greensburg United Methodist Church in Martinsburg. She enjoyed making and decorating cakes for her grandchildren’s birthdays along with baking her famous applesauce cakes and zucchini cakes that she loved to give away. Pat’s goal in life was to serve others by taking care of her family, cooking for others throughout her career, and along with her husband, Cletus, donating food to support the Rescue Mission and CCAP Loaves & Fishes. She filled her retirement years with her love of reading mystery novels, working crossword puzzles, and traveling with her sister, Cass.

Patricia is survived by two daughters, Brenda Kaye Benner Rush and husband, Jerry, of Fallston, MD, Linda Anne Benner of Martinsburg, WV; and son, Wayne E Benner and wife, Amy, of Martinsburg, WV; three grandchildren, Brittany Gayle Rush and husband, Eric Grazia of Lancaster, PA, Justin Michael Rush of Fallston, MD, and Callie Sarah Riggs of Martinsburg, WV; two step-grandchildren, Richard Rush and Brandy Michelle Rush, both of Bel Air, MD; and one great granddaughter, Nora Kaye Grazia; 7 step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Cletus E Benner, and sister, Catherine Roach.

Service will be held Monday, May 1, 2023, at 11AM at the Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, WV, with Pastor Jennifer Sawyer officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
