Obituary for Morris Rodney "Rod" DuChemin

Rod DuChemin passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021, at the age of 81, after a brief battle with cancer. He took his last breath in the arms of his love, Beth.

A fourth generation bricklayer, and a mentor and friend to many, Rod leaves a legacy of lived commitment to his craft and to the union sisters and brothers he cared for so deeply. A 66-year Gold Card member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC), at age 16 Rod began his apprenticeship indentured to A.P. Eveland & Son, BAC Local 22-OH. He later joined BAC Local 31-FL, serving as its first apprenticeship coordinator. A position as Assistant Director for the AFL-CIO’s Human Resources Development Institute brought Rod to Washington, DC. He went on to serve as Assistant to John Flynn, then Executive Vice President of the BAC, National Training Director and then Deputy Director for the BAC International Masonry Institute (IMI) and Job Corps program, before becoming Director of Labor Relations for the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, where he served for 27 years. A pilot, motorcycle racer, scuba diver, art lover, and traveler, Rod faced life and death full on with humor and grit, ever true to those he loved, including his boxer Rix.

Born in Hamilton County, OH, Rod was preceded in death by his parents, William A. and Lucille (nee Haskell) DuChemin. He is survived by his wife Beth Brent of Harpers Ferry, WV, son Ryan Whittemore, brother Paul DuChemin, sister-in-law Joanne DuChemin, and niece Meghan Davis and her children Zoe and Eli.
