Obituary for Mary Needy Hodges

Mary Needy Hodges, 80, of Martinsburg, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023 under the care of Shenandoah Center in Charles Town.

Mary was born on September 19, 1942. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Jarboe Hodges, Jr., and Nannie Needy Hodges.

Mary attended local schools and graduated from Martinsburg High School. She attended Shepherd College where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority.

In her younger years she worked at Corning Glass in Martinsburg. Following an accident that prohibited her from working, she became a skilled and popular organist. She played for many weddings in the area and was a long time organist for the Bedington United Methodist Church in Bedington and more recently the Falling Waters Presbyterian Church in Spring Mills.

Mary was a member of the original Echo Falls Homemakers Club in Bedington and an early volunteer for Hospice of the Panhandle. Mary was involved in the County Committee for the Berkeley County CEO program.

From a very young age, Mary lived in Bedington with her aunts and uncle. Her Aunt Helen (Honey) Needy was like a mother to Mary. Aunt Rachel and Uncle Allen Whitmore provided a home for Helen and Mary.

Mary is survived by her nephew, William Hodges Hendricks, his wife Amy Garies, their children Gavin Garies Hendricks, Athena Elizabeth Hendricks (Alexandria, VA); a first cousin, Jim Staley, and wife Peachy Staley, (Shepherdstown); her half-sister, Cathy Gainey (Morehead City, NC), and a dear friend, David Baker (Martinsburg).

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Samuel Joseph Hodges; sister, Ida Elizabeth Hodges Hendricks; brother-in-law, William Hampton Hendricks, Aunt Helen Needy, Aunt Rachel Needy Whitmore, and Allen Whitmore; and a half-brother, John C. Hodges.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 2PM at the Falling Waters Presbyterian Church at Spring Mills with Reverend John W. Cushwa officiating.

Interment will be private in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
