Obituary for Lester Harvey Swartz

Lester Harvey Swartz, 88 of Martinsburg, passed away January 6, 2021 at his residence with
family by his side. He courageously fought his illness for three years. He was the son of the late
Harvey W. Swartz and Viola Frances Dayton Swartz.

For 25 years he was employed at the T.E. Matthews Foundry. He was an expert welder and his
many welding projects are visible in many places around Martinsburg, including the iron gates
at the entrances to War Memorial Park.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, proudly serving his country in the Republic of Panama.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Doris VanMetre Swartz of 67 years, two sons,
Randy (Melissa) Swartz and Rick (Melody) Swartz, ten grandchildren and fifteen great
grandchildren, sister, Anna Fogle, brother-in-law, Junior VanMetre and his faithful “doggie”
Lucky.

He was a dedicated and faithful member of New Hope Bible Church.

He was always a very kind and gentle person, loved by all who knew him.

Services will be on Monday, January 11 th at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. Viewing will
begin at 10:00 am with funeral services to follow at 11:00 am, with son Randy Swartz and
Pastor Clyde Brooks officiating.

In lieu of flowers family requests donations be made to New Hope Bible Church and Hospice of
the Panhandle.

Visitors will be required to wear masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.
