Obituary for Leighton Busey Miller

Leighton Busey Miller, 83, of Shepherdstown passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility, after a long battle with dementia.

Born February 16, 1937 in Martinsburg, WV he was the son of the late Albert Leighton and Dorothy Busey Miller.

He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School class of 1955 and Shepherd College class of 1959.

Mr. Miller began his thirty-year education career as a teacher and then retired as an Assistant Principal at Martinsburg South Middle School. Leighton was a life-long farmer starting on the Busey farm as a young man. For seventeen years, while working in the school system, he continued his love for farming on his own farm, “Hillbrook Farm”. Following retirement from the school system, he had nearly 30 years in his second career as a full-time farmer. He was very active in the Berkeley County Youth Fair and Jefferson County Fair.

He was a 50-year charter member of Fellowship Church of the Brethren.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Brown Miller; their children, Julanne Miller Sausser (Mark), Matthew Leighton Miller (Carolyn), and Michael Lyndon Miller (special friend, Karen Dailey); grandchildren, Leeann and Caroline Sausser, Mikaela and Leighton Miller, and Ryan and Julie Snyder; one sister, Maurene Miller Newkirk (Curtis); and Michael Scott Chapman and family, whom he loved as a “son”.

Graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 11:00AM at Pleasant View Memory Gardens with Tony Pirrone, Chaplain, Hospice of the Panhandle officiating. Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

Bearers will be Matt Miller, Mike Miller, Leighton Miller, Ryan Snyder, Mark Sausser, Scott Chapman, Richard Nicodemus, and Billy Ring.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff of the Hospice of the Panhandle for the love and care of Leighton.
