Obituary for Lara Tryggvadottir Engebretson
Lára Tryggvadóttir Engebretson of Charles Town, West Virginia was born October 21, 1942, and passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at home surrounded by her loving family.
Lára is survived by her husband Gary Duane Engebretson; daughter Silja Gomez (Richard Benson) of Purcellville, Virginia; brother Hrafnkell Tryggvason of Iceland; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Lára was preceded in death by her parents, Tryggvi Salomonsson and Bjarney Hólm Sigurgarðsdóttir; sister Sigrún Rockmaker; brother Magnus Tryggvason; and half-sister Ásdís Sigurðardóttir.
Born and raised in Iceland, Lára immigrated to the United States in 1963 and settled in the Washington D.C. area. She worked at the Air Line Pilots Association for 31 years retiring as the Advertising Manager for the Air Line Pilot Magazine. Upon retirement, she and Gary moved to Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
Lára was a founding member of the Icelandic Association of Washington DC serving on the board and continuing to be an active member throughout her lifetime.
Lára always made time for everyone and provided support and love for her family and friends. She enjoyed her distributed, but close-knit group of family and friends, hosting get togethers whenever possible. She will be remembered for her international cooking and baking skills, green thumb, signature quirky sense of humor, bold fashion sense, and the dedication of taking candid photos of family and friends. She enjoyed traveling and especially exploring new places, people, and experiences.
Lára never stopped fighting cancer. In fact, she raised her Viking Sword to her enemy cancer, never letting cancer take away her upbeat spirit or her will to fight. Through her, we know what courage, resilience and perseverance truly looks like. There was no quit in Lára.
Friends are invited to say a final goodbye to Lára at a memorial service which will be held on May 14, 2022, 2:00 p.m.at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Shepherdstown, WV with Pastor Karen Erskine-Valentine officiating.
Another ceremony will be held in Iceland at a later date.
