Joyce Anne Roberts, 94, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2023, at her residence in Martinsburg. Born May 7, 1928, she was the daughter of Sarah E.B. Miller, a licensed practical nurse, and Clarence Raymond Miller, a mail carrier. She was raised by her paternal aunt Grace McDonald Knipe. Ms. Roberts lived near her in Funkstown, Maryland for a number of years before returning to live in Martinsburg to be closer to her daughter Deborah Kay Burkhart Placino, who preceded her in death in 2018. She is survived by her daughter, the artist and writer Kathe Burkhart of New York City and Amsterdam, the Netherlands, her friend and caregiver Catherine Stilwell of Martinsburg, and her beloved Maltese dog, Robbie.

Ms. Roberts was a 1945 graduate of Martinsburg High School. She worked as a secretary at Smith-Nadenbousch Insurance, the IRS, and for many years at the Veterans Administration. Ms. Roberts was independent, progressive, and outspoken. She loved diamonds, dogs, mangoes, movies, and music. She was an expert North Mountain mushroom forager.
