Obituary for Joseph Anthony Sappey

Joseph Anthony Sappey, 82, of Martinsburg, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 20, 2020 in Hagerstown, MD.

Born October 27, 1938 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Henri J. Sappey and Julia U. (Murphy) Sappey.

He was also preceded in death by aunts Eleanor Patoka and Ethel Sappey.

He is survived by sisters Sheila Duarte and Kathy Herrington and brother, Stephen Sappey (Maureen); sons Christopher J. Sappey (Krista) and Stephen M. Sappey (Kim); daughter Lisa M. (Sappey) Nunziata (Michael); 5 grandchildren (Mia, Alex, Matthew, Vincent and Victor); 3 nieces, 6 nephews, 19 great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

Joe graduated high school at Arch Bishop John Carroll in Washington DC, was a veteran of the US Navy, serving on the USS Forrestal and dedicated over 30 years of his life to public service; working for the Library of Congress, Department of Defense and the Department of Justice. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Smokin’ Joe was an avid golfer, a Notre Dame fan and lived to see his beloved Chiefs win another Super Bowl. His desire for sports ran deep as he was the keeper of stats. He had a heart of gold and made friends everywhere he went. He will truly be missed.

Honoring his wishes, Brown Funeral Home will be open for family to receive friends only from the hours of 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 30th with a funeral service to follow at 10:00am. Visitors will be required to wear facemasks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

Interment will be held in St. Leo Cemetery.
