Obituary for John William Johnson Jr.

John William Johnson Jr., also known as “Johnny Johnson” and “JJ”, 74, of Martinsburg West Virginia went to be with the lord on Friday, May 14, 2021 peacefully at his home.

Born January 11, 1947 in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Betty Estelle Brown and John William Johnson Sr.

He was a member and usher of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

He attended Martinsburg High School. He retired from General Motors after 30 years and 5 months of service.

He loved and played sports, Semi-Professional football, Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch Softball and Umpired the game. He mentored and coached a host of youth sports programs in Berkeley County. He lettered in all three sports that he played and excelled in, Baseball, Football, and Track and Field. He was a trailblazer in sports and in the community. He was a member of Brothers Harmony Lodge #42, Elks Lodge IBPOE of W Pride of Berkeley #402 and Friday Night Social Club in Hagerstown Maryland. Also, the Proud Name Sake of the downtown bar and grill Johnny’s Boy.

He loved music, dancing, and family gatherings. A social butterfly and enjoyed going to sporting events. A true people person and never met a stranger.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Mary Katherine Johnson “Kathy”; three sons, John Kenneth Johnson “JJ”, Curtis Lee Johnson and his wife Lakeitha “Key Key”, Jason Daryl Johnson and his wife Dorothy Nicole “Nikki”; one daughter Lorena Renee Johnson “Rennie”; his brothers, James R. Johnson “Jimmy”, Arturo Gales “Art”; special cousin Phillip R. Adams “PeeWee”; ten grandchildren, Nikia, Curtis SR., Markel, Lawrence, Pria, Jayden, John JR., Justice, Micah, Lyricq; six great-grandchildren; two dear nieces, Brenda Franklin and Anita Johnson; one dear nephew, Stephen Grantham; two sisters in- law, two brothers in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister Carolyn Michelle Grantham.

The Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood will be open to receive friends only from the hours of 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 20, 2021.

Funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at the chapel.

Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

Interment will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens Cemetery.
