Life Reflections

Joel Arthur Broadway departed this life on Friday, February 12, 2021, after a brief illness. He was born to Eugene T. and Dorothy Jean (Harris) Broadway on November 28, 1955 in Greensboro, NC.

He was the second of six children. Joel was preceded in death by his mother, and sister Rosa Ann (Broadway) Brown.

The Broadway family moved from Greensboro, NC to Marshfield, MA in 1967. Joel attended Marshfield High School and graduated in 1973. At Marshfield High School he was a stellar athlete participating in cross country, tennis and track. He attended Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU) for two years. He decided to answer the call from Uncle Sam and enlisted in the Army. He received an ROTC scholarship and attended Boston University and graduated in January 1981. He was commissioned in the United States Regular Army, Quarter Master Corps. He obtained his Airborne Wings and Jump-Master status. While on active duty he was stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC, completed two tours in Germany, Netherlands, Desert Shield/Desert Storm and retired at Ft. Lee, VA. He held positions of Director of Logistics for Military Traffic Command Europe, Material Manager and General Supply Officer for the 82nd Airborne Division Support Command and Logistics Officer at the battalion and brigade level during war and peace. Joel served in the military for fifteen years and retired as a Major in September 2001. After his military career Joel worked for a logistics firm in Petersburg, VA, and a Marketing firm in Fayetteville, NC. At the time of his passing Joel was working at the Martinsburg, West Virginia Veterans Affairs Medical Center as a Veteran Experience Liaison where he assisted veterans in obtaining their military benefits.
Joel met Bernd Hoos in 1982 and married the love of his life in February 2014. Joel was a faithful visitor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, in Clinton, MD. +

Joel enjoyed family time, traveling, music, attending jazz festivals, playing tennis, bowling, fishing and walking his dogs J-Lo and B-Lo, and a Persian cat breeder. An avid New England Patriots fan, one might think he was part owner of the Patriots as he followed their draft picks, attended training camps, and attended Patriots home and away games. He had a goal to attend all 32-football team’s stadiums and had completed six.
Joel leaves to cherish his memories, his husband Bernd, mother in-law Anna Merle, brother in-law Uwe Merle, Father Eugene T. Broadway, Sr., Brother Eugene T. Broadway, Jr. (Terry). Sisters Gale Mitchell, Gaye Broadway, and Donna Bonner (Julius). Brother in-law Tyler Brown. Nieces Nicole Neco (James), and Jeralexia Mitchell. Nephew Shannon Brown (Sarah). Great-Nephews Kaiden J. Mitchell, and James A. Neco, III. Two incredibly special friends Nadine Fernandes and Sheneal Purvis and a host of cousins.

Don’t Cry
Here we are again
That old familiar place
Where the wind will blow
No one ever knows the time nor place
Don't cry for me
Don't shed a tear
The time I shared with you will always be
And when I'm gone, still carry on
Don't Cry for me
No one is the blame,
My death was meant to be
Don't carry guilt nor shame
The reason why I came soon you'll see
Don't cry for me
Don't shed a tear
The time I shared with you will always be
And when I'm gone, please carry on
Don't Cry for me
Don't cry when life is not the joy it should be
With life comes pain
Soon time will end this course appointed
And you will be rewarded
And all the world will see
Don't cry for me
Don't shed a tear
The time I shared with you will always be
And when I'm gone
Life still carries on
Don't cry for me
We'll always be
Don't cry for me
