Obituary for Hickory Austin Kern

Hickory Austin Kern, 84, of Bunker Hill passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021 at the VA Medical Center.

Born October 21, 1936 he was the son of the late William Harlan Kern and Veda Zell Chapman Kern.

Hickory was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing, even with his walker. He loved working rodeos. He was a carpenter. Hickory was unique and a good man, they don’t make them like him anymore.

He is survived by his wife of more than 22 years, Helen Louise Clark Price Kern; three sons, William Kern and wife Nicole of Zanesville, OH, James Price and wife, Debbie of Bunker Hill, Douglas Price of Bunker Hill; one daughter, Tammy May and husband, Terry of Bunker Hill; son-in-law, Jay Mellon of Stanley, VA eight grandchildren, Jimmy, Terry, Jr., Rhonda, Tiffany, Amanda, Douglas, Jr., Kaylee and Hunter; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Trice and Susie Frye; special close nephew, Earl Trice and wife, Carrol; special niece, Sabrina Lapole and husband, Earl; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Kern; one daughter, Cyndi Mellon; two brothers, Alfred Kern and Billy Kern; three sisters, Rhoda Kern, Louise Butts and Pearl Ware.

The Brown Funeral Home will be open to receive friends only from the hours of 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2021. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with David Davis officiating. Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

Interment will be private.
