Obituary for Franklin Roosevelt Deener

Franklin Roosevelt Deener, 84

Franklin “Frank” Roosevelt Deener of Martinsburg, West Virginia, died on December 16, 2020. He was 84.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Frank was born December 3, 1936, in Brownsville, Maryland, to Merle and Ottalie Kitzmiller Deener. His parents named him after the president, who had just won a second term amid the Great Depression.

Frank was one of eight children to grow up in a two-story log house in nearby Yarrowsburg.
He graduated from Boonsboro High School and enlisted in the US Army, where he served as a military policeman stationed in Germany.

After completing his service, Frank returned to western Maryland. He held a series of jobs, including at the Moller Organ Co. factory in Hagerstown and at a factory that made industrial brushes in Frederick.

Frank got a job in the early 1970s at the newly opened Eastalco aluminum smelting plant in Adamstown, Maryland. He worked for Alcoa Inc. for more than 25 years, with an important job on the factory’s furnaces.

Frank married Jean Karen Shewbridge on March 5, 1971, at the First Baptist Church of Frederick. They were married for almost 50 years, raised four children and several dogs and cats.

Frank loved nature. He had several prime mushroom-hunting spots in the woods of western Maryland. He had a green thumb and relished in the tomato plants he grew in his backyard. He also loved sitting among trees and watching birds.
He stayed glued to the Weather Channel and usually knew whether there’d be snow, rain or sunshine in the cities that his kids were traveling to as adults – before they got there. He enjoyed watching golf on TV even though he had never played the game himself, and he liked meeting people and socializing at the casino.

Frank is survived by his wife, Jean Deener; a son, John Grier, Jr. (wife Susan Grier); and three daughters, Kacee Deener (husband Darren Samuelsohn), Karen Bowers (husband Danny Bowers) and Dana Bendidi (husband Khalid Bendidi). He has four grandchildren: Brennan Deener, Alexandra Bowers, Emma Bowers, Adam Bendidi, as well as four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements by Brown Funeral Home.
