Obituary for Emma Mae Ray (Waddell)

Emma Mae (Waddell) Ray, 85, of Ranson, WV passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 11, 2020. She was surrounded by family.

Born April 23, 1935, Tazwell, VA, she was the daughter of the late Walter Waddell and Mary Felicia (Collins) Waddell. Emma was a member of Grace Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. She worked for National Geographic for 20 years before retiring early to watch some of her grandchildren. Emma enjoyed watching football and was a dedicated Washington Redskins fan. She loved having her large family and friends over for holiday celebrations and cook outs. Emma was an avid card player who sometimes showed her competitive side. She had such a welcoming nature and was known to many non-family members as “mom or grandma”.

She is survived by two sons, Roland Ray and wife Janet, of Damascus, Maryland, and Raymond Ray and wife Betty of Cascade, Maryland; four daughters, Yvonne Miller of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Mary Lee and husband Bob of Ranson, West Virginia, Delores Victor, of Schertz, Texas, Angie Casterlin and husband David of Frederick, Maryland; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lester Ray; sisters, Ruth, Margaret and Frances; grandson, Christopher Victor and son-in-law Gary Victor.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 16 at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood. Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing and follow directives.

Funeral services will be held at 11a.m., Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Grace Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church, 73 Burkhart’s Lane, Martinsburg, WV 25405, with Pastors Tom Blake and James Williams officiating. Interment will be at Rosedale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
