Obituary for Dorothy Jean Hoffmann (Saum)

Dorothy Jean (Saum) Hoffmann, 89, of Martinsburg, WV departed from this earthly world on July 11, 2022, surrounded and held by her loving family. She was reunited with her husband of 65 years, Walter (Walt) Hoffmann.

Born in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Robert K. and Nora Belle (nee Linebaugh) Saum. As the matriarch of the Hoffmann family, Dorothy was a quiet, steady powerhouse who cared for her family and community with tremendous generosity.

She was the magic-maker and orchestrator who worked behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly; without this support, many of our personal and professional endeavors would not have been possible. She was the foundation of and glue that kept her household and the family businesses, including Woodbriar Golf Course and Century 21, together. She made it seem effortless, but we now understand the strength and dedication it took. She was kind, gentle, and charming, and through her actions and words, taught many lessons in compassion and humility. Dorothy was the epitome of a saint.

Dorothy was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing and gardening. She was a meticulous family historian and storyteller - dating, writing notes on, and organizing thousands of photos of her family to pass down to future generations. She was an active, lifelong member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ first in Hagerstown, MD and then Martinsburg, WV.

Her approach to a connected, meaningful life shaped and will continue to ripple into the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Nothing lit up the room more than Dorothy's smile when her grandchildren and great grandchildren entered. They are a reflection of her love, warmth, and care.

A devoted wife, loving mother, treasured grandmother, and beloved great-grandmother, she is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Walter Hoffmann; her siblings Janice Caniford, Robert Saum, and Donald Saum; and infant great-granddaughter Alivia Jean (AJ) Liston. Dorothy is survived by her four children, Natalie Hoffmann and her partner Harold Barlow, Mark and Kelly Hoffmann, Tara and Dennis Mason, and Lu Ann and Todd Moran; nine grandchildren Chanda, Amy, Christopher, Claire, Andrew, Sarah, Casey, Parker and Grace; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Josephine (Harry) Swope.

A graveside service at Cedar Lawn will be held Saturday September 10th at 3:30pm. Interment of Dorothy and Walter Hoffmann will follow immediately afterwards. All are welcome.
