Obituary for Dennis Clifton Coffinberger

Dennis Clifton Coffinberger, 92, of Kearneysville passed away on January 17, 2021. He was born July 27, 1928. He was the son of the late James Clifton Coffinberger and Martha (Link) Coffinberger. He was the last of eleven children: James (Martha), Pauline, Margaret, William (Elizabeth), Daniel (Marguerite), Eunice (Lee Evans), Lee (Helen), John (Evelyn), Nannie (Samuel Kipe) and Mary (Calvin “Mac” Caldwell).

“Denny” served honorably in the Army during the occupation of Japan. He worked for J.C Penney, B.F. Goodrich and retired as Shepherdstown’s Postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service. He went to work delivering papers when he was five to help his widowed mother.

He was once an active volunteer at the South Berkeley Fire Hall from its beginning. He was also an active life member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Woodworking was his art.

Frances (Sine) Coffinberger, his wife of 72 years, and four surviving children: Beverly (Patrick Murphy), Steven (Barbara), Timothy, Mildred “Missy” (Robert Park) and daughter-in-law Christine Snow. He was preceded in death by one son Dennis, two daughters-in-law: (Vicki and Beth), and three grandchildren (Shannon, Megann and Daniel). He is survived by ten grandchildren, two step granddaughters and twenty-two great grandchildren.

The family is deeply appreciative for dad’s care and assistance provided by Hospice of the Panhandle.

Denny’s longtime friend, Pastor James Riley, will conduct a private service at the Uvillia Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, St. John’s Lutheran Church on Martin Street, or his favorite shop teacher’s “George Whitehair Scholarship Fund, c/o Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation.
