Obituary for David Lyndon Woods

David Lyndon Woods, Captain, Ret. USN, longtime resident of the Martinsburg area in West Virginia, passed away on December 15, 2022. He was 90 years old. He was born on July 23, 1932, in San Jose, CA the son of Donald Mason Woods and Lynda Rosalia (Mueller) Woods.

He was a Navy veteran and served as the Director of the Naval Scientific and Technical Information Department of the Navy. "Navy Dave" served as a past President of the Reserve Officers Association. He was the chief speechwriter for the Chief of Naval Material.

He was the author of several books on the history of communications which earned him his PhD and wrote many articles for the Institute of Naval Proceedings. He was an editorialist and contributed to the Martinsburg Journal and Hagerstown Herald Mail. He was heavily involved in the local Republican Party of WV and served as a delegate. He had a weekly radio show about various forms of music.

He loved to travel, was a voracious reader, and was an amazing speaker. He was an ardent supporter of our National Parks system. He was a huge fan of all the local sports teams, especially the Washington Commanders. He was a local actor and in his last appearance in WV played Santa Claus in A Miracle on 34th Street twice.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne-Renee Jones; five daughters, Stephanie Woods of Springfield, MA, Allyson Traba of Santa Rosa CA, Roberta Woods of Santa Cruz, Ca., Dana Bunce of Bloomsbury, NJ, and Meridith Woods of Chico, Ca. He had five grandchildren, Kimberly and Kellie Bunce, Kevin Traba, Christian and Diva Leech, and one great granddaughter, Mackenzie Leech.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Woods.

Services will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
