Obituary for Cletus Eugene Benner

Cletus Eugene Benner, of Martinsburg, WV, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at Elmcroft Senior Living while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born October 9, 1933 in Shepherdstown, WV, he was the son of the late Bernard A Benner and Sarah H. McKee Benner.

He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School class of 1951. He began working at Southern States after high school. He then served his country after being drafted in December 1955 into the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Pensacola, Florida until he was medically discharged. He returned to Southern States where he worked his way up through the company to Assistant Manager. He retired after 37 ½ years in November 1992. Cletus was a member of Greensburg United Methodist Church in Martinsburg. He filled his retirement years volunteering for Meals on Wheels. He could be found on any given day helping to pack lunches and/or deliver meals. Cletus was most at home when working in his vegetable garden and many flowerbeds. He enjoyed all sports. He played sports in his younger years and then enjoyed attending high school, collegiate and professional games as well as watching games on television.

Cletus is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia Ann Thompson Benner at Elmcroft Senior Living in Martinsburg, WV, two daughters, Brenda Kaye Benner Rush and husband, Jerry, of Fallston, MD, Linda Anne Benner of Martinsburg, WV and son, Wayne E Benner and wife, Amy, of Martinsburg, WV, three grandchildren, Brittany Gayle Rush and husband, Eric Grazia of Lancaster, PA, Justin Michael Rush of Fallston, MD, and Callie Sarah Riggs of Martinsburg, WV, two step-grandchildren, Richard Rush and Brandy Michelle Rush, both of Bel Air, MD, one sister, Mary Lou Benner Silcox and husband, Joe, of Martinsburg, WV, 7 step-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Bernard A Benner Jr, Nannie Mae Benner, Raymond P Benner, William A Benner, and Stuart M Benner.

Viewing will be Tuesday, May 25, 2021 from 12 to 1 pm followed by the funeral service at 1 pm at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W King St, Martinsburg, WV with Dr Edward Grove officiating. Visitors will be required to wear face masks and practice social distancing.

Interment will be at Rosedale Cemetery.
