Obituary for Charles "Eddie" Edsel Swaim

Charles Edsel “Eddie” Swaim, 93, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2021 at Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility.

Born September 30, 1927 in Berkeley County, WV, he was the son of the late Miles and Onetia Lamp Swaim.

Eddie leaves many friends from Winchester Avenue Christian Church where he was a member for many years. He was retired from the Department of Agriculture where he worked as an inspector. He was employed at Citizens National Bank in Martinsburg.

Eddie was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his service in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. He received this award on May 30, 2015 recognizing his service.

He is survived by his son, Kirk Swaim of Frederick, MD; cousins Bill and Cindy Swaim, Donald and Sue Swaim, Andrew Swaim, and Judy Butz; nephews, Steve; niece, Deb Matthews; and his “adopted” daughter, Crissy Britner.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Louise Matthews Swaim; and nephew, David Matthews.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 2:00PM at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Ricketts and Rev. Ben Manning officiating. Family will receive friends from 1:00PM to 2:00PM prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment will be private in Rosedale Cemetery. Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

Family would like to thank Harmony Assisted Living and Hospice of the Panhandle for their care of Eddie. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
