Obituary for Anthony "Tony" Cordell

Anthony “Tony” Cordell, 94, of Martinsburg passed away on Friday, February 12, 2021 at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility.

Born March 25, 1926 in Bessemer, PA he was the son of the late Luigi Cordelli and Rosa Cimpella Cordelli.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Sons of Italy, the Martinsburg Moose, and the Beaver Creek Country Club.

He attended ST. Mary’s Catholic School and Hagerstown High School. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He worked for railroad started his career as crew caller with Western Maryland Railroad, and fireman, clerk for Penn Central Railroad, retiring as Regional Manager from Conrail in 1983.

A gifted athlete he enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, and football in his youth. After the war he played minor league baseball and managed the 1956 and 1957 Sharpsburg Bluebirds Baseball Championship teams. In his later years, he was an avid golfer and was always up for a good debate.

He is survived by three sons, Chris Cordell, Clay Cordell (Missy), and Joe Cordell (Betsy); two daughters, Beth McGowan and Patti Lord; eight grandchildren, Brandon (Brittney), Michael, Chad, Matt, Courtney Cordell, Jessica (Keith) Michael, and Greg (Tracy) and Danny Lord; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Eligio “Lee” Cordelli and wife, Joanne; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Brophy Cordell; one son, John Casey Cordell; one brother, Francis “Frank” Cordell.

The Brown Funeral Home will be open for family to receive friends only from the hours of 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Thomas Gallagher celebrant.

Interment prayers will be said at Old Norborne Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle or to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Martinsburg.
