Obituary for John William Harmison

John William Harmison, Sr., 89, of Martinsburg, passed away, February 21, 2020 under the care of Hospice, Ruby Memorial after a short illness.

Born September 20, 1930, he was the son of the late Harlan Harmison and Lilian Dodson.

John was a veteran of the Korean Conflict proudly serving with the US Army. He earned among his awards a Purple Heart from wounds received from a hand grenade injury. After a long recovery he started working at the Newton D. Baker Medical Center, now the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. He worked there for 35 years until his retirement in 1985. He then had a career with Pinkerton Security Service. In his later years he traveled around the country visiting every state.

John is survived by his sons, John Jr. (Debbie), Michael (Barb), Tracy (Felicia), Terry (Nicole), and Gary (Donna); grandchildren, John III, Niki, Bobbie Jo, Joshua, Lauren, Kaitlyn, Justin Trey, Emilee, Kelsey; Ashley, Katelynn, and Hannah; great grandchildren, Jack, Shade, Javon, Grayson, Embry, Lily, Wyatt, Elizabeth, Heather, Amelia; one great grandchild, and one great-great grandchild on the way. He is survived by siblings, Kathleen Hinkle. Barbara Harmison, and Anna Mae Imbach. He is also survived by his companion for the last several years, Barbara Gray.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Virginia, siblings, Phillip, Edith, Virginia, Leroy, Wendell, Harlan Jr., and Wilson, and one grandchild, Bradley Eric.

John was proud of his military service, having served on the Combined Honor Guard for years. He was also past WV State Commander of the D.A.V. and Order of the Purple Heart.

Family will receive friends Monday, February 24, 2020 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at the funeral home with Pastor Dave Caplinger officiating.

Military graveside services will be held in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
