An avid WVU fan, he would remark, “I bleed Blue and Gold”. He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry. He loved classic rock music, guitars, all things mechanical and technical, and sharing jokes and conversations with family and friends. He was a proud member of the Churchill Society of Martinsburg.

Surviving relatives include: Diane, his wife of 38 years; his children Amanda, Zachary and Matthew (and spouse Zachary Saunders); sisters Anna Clay (and husband Scott) and Mary McClaugherty (and spouse George); sister-in-law Joan Carlson (and husband David); father-in-law Alton Shipley.
