Ashley Witmer

I never understood when people said their grief came in waves.

When mama left, I was just sad. I was sad all the time. I was sad until I wasn’t all that sad anymore. And then I was sad, but I didn’t cry.

When you left, though, MomMom, I understood it. I understood the waves. I understood how it felt to drown in my grief. I know I’ll see you again. I’m not sad because I want you back — I never wanted you to stay on this earth, in pain and unable to find relief. But I miss you. And I can’t believe you’re gone. And these waves keep hitting me. I catch a breath and then I feel another wave.

I miss you so much. I miss your voice. I keep listening to old voicemails just so I can hear it. I find comfort in knowing I’ll see you again. But man, these waves keep hitting.
