Sherrill Alvin Mongan, 90, of Martinsburg, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2019. He had suffered with congestive heart failure and stage 3 kidney disease for the last six months and continued to physically decline.
Born on January 21, 1929 in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Jacob Lewis Mongan and Margaret Belle Gray Mongan. His Mom passed away in 1937 when he was eight years old, but his memories of her were deep and abiding.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gyrl Lou Shifflett Mongan; one son, Dennis Sherrill Mongan and wife, Janine; one daughter, Margaret Renee’ Manuel and husband, Douglas; two grandchildren, Jason Sherrill Mongan and wife, Alisandra and Megan Renee’ Holbrook and husband, Dillon; one great grandchild, Gavin Archer Mongan and one great grandchild due in March 2020, Aaronson Douglas Mason Holbrook. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life Sherrill had several nicknames: Sam (based on his initials); Buck (from Buck Jones his favorite cowboy hero); and Pop or Poppy which his immediate family, and others, affectionately called him.
Sherrill graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1946.
Prior to 1965, Sherrill was a member of Winchester Avenue Christian Church. In 1965 he became a founding and active member of the Church of Christ – Northside. He faithfully attended all services for those 54 years until the past few months when his illness prevented him from leaving home.
In 1989 he retired as a yardmaster from the B&O / Chessie System after almost 40 years of service. He continued to love anything related to the B&O and never really appreciated the B&O being swallowed by the C&O / Chessie System.
He and Gyrl Lou loved motoring over Skyline Drive. During the Fall when the leaves were at their peak for color was his favorite. In years past he and his wife would go to Big Meadows on Skyline Drive for a hot roast beef sandwich. This was an additional reward in combination with the beautiful scenery.
Sherrill was very active in sports in his younger years. From a youth up, baseball and softball were two of his favorites. He was very accomplished at both. When Berkeley Lanes opened in Martinsburg, bowling was added to his sports list at which he was also successful.
Sherrill was one of nine children. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Floyd William Mongan, Jacob Lee Mongan, Herman Russell Mongan, George Emmert Mongan, Bruce Roosevelt Mongan, Charles Leslie Mongan and Kenneth Gray Mongan; and one sister, Margarette Ellen Mongan Armstrong.
Graveside service, per Sherrill’s request, will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Pleasant View Memory Gardens with Dennis S. Mongan officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sherrill’s name to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
