Obituary for George Allen Dawson

George Allen Dawson, age 69, of Martinsburg, WV went home to be with his Lord on Oct. 29, 2019, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.

George was born in Sarcoxie, Missouri to Chester and Margaret (Plummer) Dawson on Aug. 18, 1950. After high school graduation, George served in the US Army as a Green Beret during 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. When he returned home, he worked for the government as a food inspector, eventually becoming an FDA Consumer Safety Officer after earning his B.S. in science, taking classes at night while working fulltime days and raising a family.

He retired from the FDA in 2014, after 35 years total employment with the government.

He then worked part-time as a gun range safety officer at Peacemakers International near Gerrardstown, WV.

George was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, and 1 brother. He is survived by his loving wife Shelly Swain, of Martinsburg, a bother-in-law, Bruce Swain, of Hancock, MD, 5 children; Tuyet Dawson, Tulsa, OK; Monica (Dawson) Dandridge and her husband, Dale Dandridge, Bunch, OK.; Gabrielle Mathis of Olathe, KS.; Gerrod Dawson, McPherson, KS.; and Geremiah Dawson, Bakersfield, CA. He has several grandchildren, including Tera Dawson, OK, and Cash and Mason Dandridge of Bunch, OK. George was blessed with 1 great-grandchild, a girl, Jude Dawson of OK.

He loved his spoiled cats, Addy, Cashmere, and Tink. George had a wonderful sense of humor and a sharp wit. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A memorial service celebrating George’s life will be held on Sat., Nov. 23, 2019, at 11am at 2nd Opequon Presbyterian Church in Winchester, VA.
