Obituary for Anna "Lenore" Haines Kief (Haines)

OnThursday, October 10, 2019, God looked down and saw that our loving Mother, Anna “Lenore” Haines Kief, 95, was tired and called her home for her Heavenly reward. She passed at Berkeley Medical Center and had been a resident of Elmcroft. Lenore was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia on March 15, 1924 to the late Virgil Elwood Haines and Rhoda Ellen Josephine Park Haines.

Lenore has two sisters, Carson Shanholtz, deceased and Phyllis Corbon of Romney, WV.

She graduated from Capon Bridge High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1942. Soon after graduation, she moved to Martinsburg, rooming with her cousin, Eva Combs Kief, deceased, who later became her sister-in-law. She was employed, for a time, at the Interwoven Woolen Mill in the office. On December 23, 1943, she married the late Carl Preston Kief, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1989.

She was the mother of four children, Carl P. Kief, Jr. (Sue), B. Carolyn Costello (Charles), the late Jerry E. Kief who died on September 30, 2019, and Sandra D. Sims (Terry). She was Mamaw to seven grandchildren: Billie Jo Ryman, Lisa Patterson, Amy Kief, Bonnie Linton, Joy Sims, Brian Sims, and Travis Jones; and seven great-grandchildren: Blair and Carlie Ryman, Lacy and Colby Linton, Brenna and Reid Patterson, and Leikin Sims.

She had been a faithful member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for over 60 years and taught the #23 Sunday School Class of Ladies for many years. Over the years, she had volunteered with Chris Curry’s first grade at Winchester Avenue School. Lenore was very involved as a Berkeley County 4-H Leader for over 40 years and was a West Virginia 4-H All Star.

She was an excellent seamstress and did alternations for many years. Our Mother enjoyed the visits of her special “sewing” customers. She also enjoyed reading and crocheting.

Obeying her wishes, there will be no visitation. Graveside memorial service will be held at Pleasant View Memory Gardens on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Michael Cantley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Berkeley County 4-H All Star Association for college scholarships. Mail donations to Mr. Tim O’Connell, 76 Brenda Drive, Martinsburg, WV 25404.
