With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our loving and devoted daughter, Julie Lynette Smith, 52, of Bunker Hill, on Sept. 17, 2019. She was a friend to all whose lives she touched, and her laugh, humor, and unconditional love for her family will be greatly missed.
After a 4 year battle with cancer, Julie passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Winchester Medical Center. Everyone that knew her was amazed by her strength and faith. She will be remembered with admiration for her positive attitude in living with cancer.
Julie was born during a blizzard on Feb. 7, 1967, in Winchester, Virginia. She was the daughter of John Wesley Smith and Sherry (Burgess) Smith, Bunker Hill. Maternal grandparents were John "Chick" Burgess and Beulah Burgess and paternal grandparents were Earl and Ada Smith, all of Bunker Hill.
She was a dedicated Certified Nursing Assistant, having graduated from Musselman High School and James Rumsey Technical Institute in 1985.
Julie lived a full life as a wonderful mother and homemaker. As a CNA, she did private duty nursing care at Westminster Canterbury in Winchester, Virginia, for over 20 years. Her love and devotion to Ann and Jim Milano for 11 years, and Ruth Cone for 10 years was a blessing to them and their families. In recent years, she worked as a classroom aide for Berkeley County Schools where she enjoyed working with the children.
As a member of the Bunker Hill Brethren in Christ Church, she loved helping with their many activities. She served for 28 years as the organizational assistant for the Berkeley County Schools Scholarship Pageant and also served as the concessions chairperson for several years. She was always willing to help whatever the need.
She especially enjoyed watching The Golden Girls and visiting with her many friends. Her favorite pastimes were feeding the deer that lived in her yard, camping with family while making two pound hamburgers for them to enjoy, eating peanut butter balls and enjoying milk shakes. The nickname "Sugarfoot" always brought a smile to her face. Her poodle, Prissy, was her most faithful companion and she affectionately loved spoiling her.
Surviving are beloved parents; a son, Jonathan Frank Breeden and his wife, Shana Messer-Breeden; a sister, Janelle Rae Sperry, husband, Will Sperry; niece Elizabeth Sperry; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is also survived by her beloved and faithful poodle, Prissy.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, at the Bunker Hill Brethren in Christ Church, 9203 Winchester Avenue, Bunker Hill, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Raymond Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Paynes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, Ridgeway. Following the interment, a meal will be served for family and friends at the Bunker Hill Brethren in Christ Church.
Long time friends and family serving as pall bearers are Will Sperry, Jack Sperry, Alan Rosenblatt, Michael Brill, Doyle Collins, Ray Miller, Devin Sperry, and Roger Clower.
