Obituary for Wayne Lester Whitmore

Wayne Lester Whitmore, 90, of Martinsburg passed away Friday, September 13,2019.

Born to the Benjamin Lester Whitmore and Belva Shanholtz Whitmore Irvin.

He was a graduate of Martinsburg High school in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948. After basic training he was sent to Japan during the Korean War, spending two and a half years in Japan as an Air Defense Controller and a Staff Sargent. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church since 1946. He retired from Dupont with 30 years as shift supervisor. He was active in Martinsburg Midget Football and Martinsburg Little League as a coach in 1960 and 1970, also a former member of the Elks Lodge 778.

On September 13, 1952 he married Catherine Ponton. He is survived by a son, Ronald K. Whitmore and wife, Joette of Bellevue, KY.; granddaughter, Katie Avery of East Berlin, PA.; grandson, Kevin Whitmore of Allenstown, PA.; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dean K. Whitmore; sister, Kleeanna Lewis; step- father, Lawrence Irvin; and step- sister, Mary Jane Clowser.

The family would like to Thank Berkeley Medical Center, Clary Grove Nursing Home, and Panhandle Home Health.

Family receiving friends on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home with Pastor Matthew Day officiating.

Military graveside services will follow at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
