Obituary for Ed

David “Ed” Fincham, 82, of Martinsburg, WV, is resting in the loving arms of the Lord after he passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at the Winchester Medical Center surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born in Webster County, WV, he was the son of the late William & Talva Kelly Fincham. He was a man of great faith who loved Christ and was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sophia Arvon Fincham; two sons: Chris, wife Jennifer “JJ”; Andrew, wife Amy; one brother: Gordon Fincham; and two sisters: Donna Gibson & Marsha Meadows. He is also survived by in-laws: Manuel & Jean Arvon, Nick & Mary Jane Arvon, Bob & Georgia Price, and Charlie & Ella Sue Arvon; seven nephews: Manny Arvon, wife Pam; Marc Arvon, wife Debbie; Matt Arvon, wife Lynne; Pete Arvon, wife Barbara; David Price, wife Pam; Nicky Pete Arvon, wife Tracy; and Tony Arvon; and two nieces: Athena Boggs, husband Billy; and Christina Arvon. He is also survived by numerous great-nephews and nieces and countless lifelong friends who love him dearly.

Ed started his teaching career in Boone County, WV in 1960 and moved to Martinsburg in 1968 to be a Physical Education professor at Shepherd University, where he was a faculty member for 50 years. He served as an assistant football coach, head golf coach, head girls basketball coach (the program’s all time most winningest coach), and the university’s intramural director. He received numerous accolades for his many achievements; namely, Ed was inducted into the Shepherd University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. He also took a sabbatical in 1994 to Melbourne, Australia to research international PE programs.

Ed loved leading an active lifestyle and being outdoors. He was an avid runner and was given the nickname “Fast Eddie.” He enjoyed refereeing from 1960–2018 and officiated at the Senior World Olympics in Australia in 2002. Ed was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the WV Athletic Directors Association in 2009 for 57 years of officiating. He also founded and served as the director of a summer youth sports camp. Ed was an all-state high school athlete and a Three Sport Star (football, basketball, baseball) at Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston). Most of all, Ed genuinely loved people and enjoyed a good conversation.

Family will receive friends on Monday, August 26, 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bethel Assembly of God 2010 Tavern Road, Martinsburg). The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Assembly of God with Reverend Ralph Campbell officiating.

Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Arrangements by Brown Funeral Home.
