Obituary for Virginia Lee Riner (Small)
Virginia Lee (Small) Riner, 79 passed away Monday, in the comfort of her home surrounded by family. Born August 8, 1939 in Shepherdstown to her beloved parents Jesse and James Small.
She lived a simple life full of the great faith, abundant love, and fruitful relationships. Virginia graduated from Shepherdstown High School and was a member of Mount Wesley United Methodist Church. Her activities in the church lead her to husband of sixty years, C. Archie Riner from Bedington United Methodist Church where she later became a member.
Virginia and Archie wed in 1959 and began their life together building a family and working the farm in Bedington. Virginia gave birth to six children raising them in the lessons of hard work, faith, and most importantly love. When those children provided the blessings of grandchildren she continued her legacy of love with them.
When she wasn’t raising children, watching grandchildren, or caring for the household she spent her time reading, journaling, gardening, and watching her favorite bird—the cardinal. She also greatly enjoyed mowing the lawn and soaking up the sunshine.
Her favorite color was red and she wore it with great confidence and beauty. It was rare to see her wearing anything but that color and she often referred to herself as the lady in red. She said that red made people happy and so she wore it spreading her joy.
Her warm, caring heart, infectious laugh, and comforting presence will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband, C. Archie Riner, six children, Cheri L. DeHaven and husband Donald, Archie L. Riner and wife Kathy, Cathy L. Fravel, James A. Riner, Charles E. Riner, and Randall S. Riner and wife Amy. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Michelle Files, Chris DeHaven and wife Staci, Sierra Engle and husband Greg, Brittany DeHaven, Dustin Riner, Tierney Riner, Courtney DeHaven, Travis DeHaven and wife Christina, Taylor Riner, and Matthew Riner, and great-grandchildren Aubrey, Levi, Westley, Aria, Theo, and Owen.
She is preceded in death by parents, Jesse V. and James S. Small and brother, James S. Small, Jr.
Services will be held at on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. W. Scott Summers and Rev. Dr. Dennis Jackman officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
Guests attending the services are asked to wear red in her honor. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hospice of the Panhandle.
