Obituary for Paul E. Hayes, Jr.
Paul Hayes, 93, of Gerrardstown passed away on Monday, June 24, 2019 at Berkeley Medical Center.
Born September 21, 1925 in Berkeley County, WV he was the son of the late Edward Hayes and Elsie Shipper Hayes.
He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II as a machine gunner. He received the German Occupation Medal, Purple Heart, 3 Battle Stars, Bronze Star, Combat Badge 75th Infantry, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. His regiment captured 27 enemy prisoners, next day he faced near death when a piece of shrapnel went through his helmet and into his head. Then a steel plate was inserted into his head. Thirty-eight months in battle then he re-enlisted while the war was still raging on in Japan.
He had many jobs which included hospital guard, truck driver, quarry worker, school bus driver, and farming.
He always said “I’m just a poor farmer trying to raise children”.
He is survived by a son, Lynn Hayes and wife, Annabell; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Roger Hayes; and two sisters, Darlene Slonaker and Cheryl Brindle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Virginia Brown Hayes; one son, Paul Ronald Hayes; two daughters, Beverly Gay Hayes and Robin Gayle Hayes; and one brother, Glenwood Hayes.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, June 29, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood.
Funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the South Berkeley Chapel with Pastor Don Preston officiating. Interment will be in Tuscarora Presbyterian Cemetery.
