Obituary for Mary Ellen Murphy (Clark Miller)

Mary Ellen Clark Miller Murphy, 102, passed from this earth to join her heavenly Father on June 20, 2019. Born in 1916, in Gormania, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Otis Clark and Goldie Jones Clark. Mary’s mother passed away shortly following her birth. Later, Mary became the step-daughter of Ada Dellinger Clark.

Mary married Vincent W. Miller in 1936 and they were married 43 years. They owned and operated Miller’s Grocery on Route 9 in Hedgesville for many of those years. During this time, they also owned and operated a farm on McCoy’s Ferry Road where they raised beef cattle. Mary was also a Corning retiree.

Mary married Bernard Murphy in 1982. They enjoyed 35 years of marriage during which they traveled throughout the United States and to many countries around the world. For many years, they enjoyed attending a summer camp for senior citizens in Glenville, WV.

Through the years Mary was very active in many local organizations, including: the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Hedgesville Fire Department (she was one of the earliest members); Meals on Wheels, and the Senior Citizens’ Kitchen Band. She was an active member of the Tomahawk Ruritan Club and the Tomahawk Homemakers’ Club. Through the Homemakers’ she was honored to represent Berkeley County in 1991 as a Belle at the Folk Festival in Glenville, WV.

Mary was a longtime member (beginning in 1936) of the Hedgesville Assembly of God, which is now the Hope Community Church. In her later years she actively participated in their Senior group.

Mary was someone who never had idle hands. When she wasn’t gardening or canning her produce, she was writing stories (for which she won awards) and poetry (she was a published poet), or she was doing some kind of craft (she especially loved to quilt, crochet and make Christmas cards and bookmarks).

In addition to her parents, step-mother, and both husbands, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Donald V. Miller; a grandson, Vincent W. Miller III; a sister, Wilma Seyse; a brother, Wilford Clark; and a step-daughter, Mary Louise Murphy.

She is survived by a son, Vincent W. Miller, Jr., and wife, Donna, of Hedgesville; two step-sons, Doug Murphy and wife, Pat, of Hedgesville, and Darrell Murphy and wife, Linda, of Falling Waters; one sister, Barbara LeHew and husband, Roger, of Bunker Hill; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren,11 great-great grandchildren, 3 great-great-great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Monday, June 24, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brown Funeral Home.
