Obituary for Joan Adele Cook (Haas)
Joan Adele Haas Cook, of Martinsburg, entered eternal life on Friday, April 19 in the care of Hospice Inpatient Facility of Kearneysville, WV surrounded by family.
She was the daughter of the late H. Joseph and Caroline Roth Haas of Martinsburg. She was a 1947 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School. On August 4, 1951 she married Carl F. “Buddy” Cook, Jr., created a loving family and a life together that they shared as sweethearts until his passing on October 1, 2000.
Always a humble and devout servant of her God and family, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and in later years extended that honor to St. Leo Catholic Church parish in Inwood WV.
The mother of four, she was preceded in death by her son Carl F. “Skippy” Cook III, whom she lovingly cared for until his passing in December 2008. Skippy was special needs and her devotion to him was and remains an inspiration to her daughters Carol Cook of Falling Waters WV; Barb Bartley of Martinsburg WV; and Wendy Headley and husband Ty Headley of Winchester VA. She was the finest person her daughters will ever know.
Joan was also preceded in death by brother J. William “Bill” Haas, and sisters Elizabeth “Betty” Grimes and Mary Jane Murphy.
In addition to her daughters, she is survived by sister Anne Catlett, granddaughters Alyssa and Jenna Bartley, and great-grandson Landon Durant. Joan is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Through the years, Joan volunteered with Meals on Wheels, enjoyed serving as an election poll worker, and participating in Senior Center activities. As her life went on, the many special people Joan attracted were true blessings. Neighbors Ted and Betsy Morgan were like family, and their devotion and friendship is cherished.
Joan’s family extended as she spent three years in the household of Lydia McAtee, a loving caregiver and “adopted daughter”, where Joan – a noted “cat lover” was also adored by Aby – Lydia’s Boston Terrier.
Joan became a member of a new community of family and caregivers as she spent the last fourteen months as a resident of Elmcroft of Martinsburg. While there, she indulged a lifelong love of bingo, enjoyed music and began to express herself with painting, to the delight of her daughters. She was loved by all and will be missed for her sweet disposition.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2019 at St. Leo Catholic Church in Inwood with Father Alfred Obiudu, celebrant. Interment prayers will be said at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 at Brown Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. A favorite of Joan’s being The Journal’s Warm the Children Fund (207 West King Street, Martinsburg WV 25401). Also encouraged is performing a random act of kindness, truly a hallmark of Joan’s life.
