Obituary for William Franklin "Bill" Schuler
William “Bill” Franklin Schuler was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on December 20, 1929 to Clarence William Schuler and Margaret Jean Schuler (formerly Kowatch). Bill was the eldest of four children, followed by his sister Jean Ann Hurley and brothers Clarence William ‘Bud’ Schuler, Jr. and Donald Bertram Schuler.
Bill spent most of his early years in the Baltimore/Lombardee Beach, Maryland, area, where he met his wife of 69 years, Joan Marie Schuler (formerly Huber). He joined the Air Force in 1950 and served his country as a Staff Sergeant Air Policeman at Turner Air Force Base in Albany, Georgia and in Lakenheath, England, earning medals for Good Conduct and National Defense Service. Following his military service, Bill returned to Baltimore and devoted his career to working as a highly skilled and respected auto body and frame technician, spending most of his career at Brooklyn Motors/Inner Harbor Ford.
Bill and Joan raised three children, Pamela Marie Schmale, William “Butch” Robert Schuler, and Steven Owen Schuler, at their home on First Avenue in Ferndale, Maryland. They spent many family vacations fishing, hunting, and camping across the United States.
Following retirement, Bill and Joan moved to their weekend home near Sleepy Creek, just outside Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. There, Bill enjoyed woodworking, family visits, and the peaceful surroundings of what was fondly known to the entire family as “the cabin.” In 2000, Bill and Joan moved to their current residence in Martinsburg, West Virginia, where they joined the congregation of St. John’s.
Bill loved all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. None were spared his well-meant (and often unsolicited) words of wisdom and guidance. His heart and soul, however, belonged to his beloved “Sweetie Pie,” Joan, who loved and cared for him until his passing on March 10, 2019.
A celebration of life will be held for Bill on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Martinsburg, WV.
