On Monday, March 4, 2019 Boyd Seibert Butts, loving husband and father of 5 children, passed away at the Berkeley Medical Center surrounded by family.
Boyd was born October 21, 1937 in Hedgesville, WV to the late Richard Newton and Blanche Celvina Montgomery Butts. He married Patricia F. Hite Butts, his wife of 56 years. He leaves behind a son, Boyd Craig Butts and his wife, Diane of Martinsburg; daughters, Beverly K. Butts-Fritts of Charlotte, NC, Brenda L. Fowler of Winchester, VA, and Belynda S. Stateler and husband, Ross of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Steven Butts; brothers, David R. Butts, William D. Butts, and Charles J. Butts; and sisters, Dora Lee Grimes and Julia M. Lucas.
A 1956 graduate of Hedgesville High School he was known for his quick wit, and his kind and compassionate spirit. Boyd had a passion for community service as exemplified by his service in the U.S. Air Force, being a founding member of Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Department, and being prominent in bringing a public water system to the community of Hedgesville. His service extended through the organizations of which he was a member. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a Past Master of Berkeley Lodge #37 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Scottish Rite and York Rite, a past Worthy Patron of Hedgesville Order of Eastern Star #67, a Board Member for Hedgesville Water Service District. Active for many years in the Hedgesville United Methodist Church, he was a dual member of Johnsontown Bible Church and First Baptist Church of Sebring, FL.
Boyd began his career as a salesman at Union Sales Dodge. He became a fireman for Martinsburg Fire Department until a debilitating injury in 1963. He was a property assessor for Berkeley County, Postmaster of Hedgesville Post Office for 20 years from 1967-1987, and owner of Double Eagle Enterprises.
A lifelong Washington Redskins and WVU Mountaineer fan and Nascar enthusiast, Boyd had a love of music. He self-taught himself to play steel guitar and later the bass. He loved to play and sing music with his friends and family from Vermont to Florida. Boyd raised and showed German Shepherds for many years, donating 3 to the Martinsburg City Police Department.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Johnsontown Bible Church with Pastor Jim Bishop and Rev. Daryl Welch officiating.
Friends will be received 12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. prior to the service.
A Masonic grave side service will be given at interment at Hedgesville Cemetery.
