Obituary for Thomas Lee Corbin

Thomas Lee Corbin
Thomas Lee Corbin, 74, of Martinsburg, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 28, 2019, at Hospice of the Panhandle. Tom was born on March 19, 1944, in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Frank N. Corbin, Sr. and Thelma Rhodes Corbin and his beloved step-mother, Frances Payne Corbin.

He was an active member of Tuscarora Presbyterian Church. Tom was a 1962 graduate of Martinsburg High School and a 1967 graduate of Shepherd University with Bachelor of Science in biology. Tom was a teacher at Hedgesville High School for 9 years where he taught biology and physical education. His principal then asked him to start a driver education program for the county. Tom went back to school to earn his certification for driver education and earned a master’s degree in safety studies from Shepherd University. He spent the next 29 years working with students from Musselman, Martinsburg, and Hedgesville as the Director of Driver Education for the Berkeley County Board of Education. Tom also spent 18 years coaching both junior varsity and varsity sports, including baseball, football, and basketball at Hedgesville High School. Tom had a strong devotion to his students, players, and coaches and never lost his love for coaching and sports. After retiring from education, Tom worked at Stonebridge Golf Course for seven years. He was a member of Elks Lodge 778 for more than 50 years. Tom loved to play golf, work out at the gym, and was a great fan of both West Virginia University and Shepherd University basketball and football.

He is survived by his two children, daughter, Cathy Corbin Ferro and husband, Michael of Martinsburg, and son, Matthew Thomas Corbin and partner, Traci Green Misiewicz of Williamsport, MD; two grandsons, Bryce Corbin Ferro and Kaleb John Corbin, one brother, Frank N. Corbin, Jr., and wife, Brenda of Lancaster, PA; two sisters, Karen T. Thatcher of Martinsburg and Susan A. Hall and husband, Chet of Dunkirk, MD; many nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Irene Hollida.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Hospice of the Panhandle. Tom’s value of education and cancer research led to the donation of his body to the WVU Gift Registry at WVU hospital.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019, at 1 p.m. at Tuscarora Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Rachel Crumley officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the Tuscarora Church Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, 8854 Tuscarora Pike, Martinsburg, WV 25403 and Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
