Obituary for Mary Hannah Shade

Mary Hannah Shade, 83, went to be with our Heavenly Father on January 24, 2019, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Living in Martinsburg for most of her life, she was born July 4, 1935, in Berkeley County, WV. She was the daughter of John Louis Hartley and Annie Jenkins Hartley.

She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School class of 1953, she also graduated from Winchester Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1956. After receiving her RN, she began working at the VA Medical Center as a staff nurse and retired as the head nurse of Orthopedics. In 1990, after being diagnosed with cancer, she retired with 34 years of service. After recovering, she moved to The Villages, Florida in 1994 where she became an avid golfer and bowler. In 2007, Mary moved back to Martinsburg to be close to her children and grandchildren.

Mary was an active member of First Baptist Church where she also enjoyed Wednesday morning Bible study with Pastor Craig Smith’s class. Mary was a member of the retired Nurses group in Winchester, VA, NARFE, and for many years the National Bowling Association.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Kisner and husband David “Satch” Kisner of Martinsburg; Vicki Shade, of Spring Mills; a son, Thomas “Tommy” Shade of Hedgesville; eight grandchildren, Michelle Kinder and husband, Colt, Rachel Lehman and husband Rodney, Daniel Kisner and wife, Amanda, Emily Walburn and husband, Zack, Trevor Shade and wife Kelly, Talia Singer and husband Jason, Cameron Shelton and Meredith Shelton; eleven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janice Cook, Sally Stolipher both of Martinsburg, Ruth Hollar of Fredericksburg, VA; and a brother John “Peachy” Hartley of Lamarque, TX.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Luther Hartley, and infant granddaughter, Amanda Marie Kisner, and the father of her children George H. Shade.

A few years ago Mary made the noble decision to donate her body to WVU in hopes of contributing to cancer research.

A celebration of her life will be held February 23, 2019 at 1:00PM at the First Baptist Church on King Street in Martinsburg. Pastor Craig Smith will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the First Baptist Church, 315 West King Street, Martinsburg, WV 25405.
