Obituary for Reverend James Robert Embrey Sr.

Reverend James Robert  Embrey Sr.
Rev. James Robert Embrey, Sr., of Martinsburg passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019 after a ten-year struggle with Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia.

The son of Mildred Madeline Beard and James Robert Embrey, Jim was born September 15, 1933. His family moved to Baltimore during his year’s in elementary school where they resided until he joined the Air Force. Upon discharge from the military, he was employed at the Baltimore Sun Newspapers agency for 32 years, retiring as an advertising manager.

He graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary an ordained Deacon of the United Methodist Church and served the congregations of Community United Methodist Church of Laurel, MD and Gary Memorial United Methodist Church of Daniels, MD. After returning to Berkeley County, he served the congregations of Trinity United Methodist Church where he led the Monday night “Trinity United Methodist Church 6:34 Services”. He also served the congregations of New Street United Methodist Church, Middleway United Methodist Church, Kabletown United Methodist Church, and Darkesville United Methodist Church.

In earlier years he was very active in Berkeley County Ministerial Association projects including War Memorial Park Vesper Services. He enjoyed music and was happiest when he was leading congregational singing and participating in choir.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Mary Jo Embrey; and her daughter, Amy McSherry Rush. Additionally he is survived by his former wife and the mother of his children Marilyn Moxley Embrey, Suzanne Ritchey and husband Tom of Knoxville, TN; Michele Winberry and fiancé Dustin of Arbutus, MD; and James Robert Embrey, Jr. and wife Sara of Nashville, TN. He is survived by sisters Estella Stigler of Baltimore, MD and Sherry Rehfield of Las Vegas, NV; a brother Samuel Larry Embrey and wife Delores of Westminster, MD; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister Patricia Whittington.

A celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 11:00a.m at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Bowers officiating. Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00a.m prior to the service at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
