Obituary for Joan Maloney Ryan

Print
Joan Maloney Ryan, 86, of Haymarket, VA was welcomed into the Lord’s hands on Sunday, November 4, 2018.

Born May 14, 1932 in Yonkers, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. Maloney and Violet W. Maloney.

Joan enjoyed a vibrant and exciting life with her husband, Jim and her family. Joan travelled (and lived) across United States and many other parts of the World. She was involved in Officer’s Wives (‘Spouses’) clubs across the world, rising to the rank of President at West Point and Fort Leavenworth. She was a tennis maven, infamous in the community for organizing weekly tennis challenges at the Stone Bridge Community in Martinsburg, WV, as well as West Point, New York, Pittsfield, New Hampshire, and Mildenhall-Lakenheath in Great Britain, although her tennis talents we often called into question. She enjoyed bridge, attending bridge clubs throughout her life. She was an excellent cook, and an adventurous human, including a transatlantic crossing in January on the SS America in the early 60’s!

She is survived by her daughter, Michele Ryan Ward, her son, James P. Ryan, Jr., (Dawn Kriegel); and seven grandchildren, Ryan James (Chelsea), William Joseph (Kara), Caitlin Elizabeth (Dustin), Connor Michael (Becca), Patrick Charles, Megan Cecilia Ward and Nicole Grainger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Ryan; son, Kevin Charles Ryan; one grandchild, Shannon; and one brother, Charles F. Maloney, Jr.

Family will receive friends on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Brown Funeral Home from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Services will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 10:30AM at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Christopher D. Murphy. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
