George Wayne “Cookie” Cookus 76, passed away Friday the 26, 2018 at Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility.
Born January 14, 1942 in Berkeley County WV, he was the son of the late George A. Cookus and Dorothy A. Jones Cookus.
George was a member of Westphal Hose Company # 5 for 17 years and Bedington Fire Department for 48 years. George was a devoted and very active member of both fire departments as a volunteer. Firefighting was a large part of his life and was in his blood from a young teenager. George was also a member of Berkeley County Special Olympics management team and a member of the Friends and Family Support group of the Grove Center Sheltered Workshop. He was a member of Vanville Church of Christ; Martinsburg Moose Club #120 and UAW Local 1590.
He retired from General Motors with 34 years of service.

He is survived by one daughter Suprina R. Cookus; step daughter Earline L. Fay Ashby; fiancé Doris Marveen Price; and four sisters Betty Allen of Martinsburg, Shirley Thomas of Inwood, Linda Bain of Bunker Hill, and Bonnie Stewart of Inwood.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia “Patsy” Cookus; one son George W Cookus II; one sister Nancy Gesford; and half- brother Forrest Cookus.
Family will receive friends Friday November 2, 2018 from 6:00PM to 9:00PM at Brown Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday November 3, 2018 at 11:00AM with Minister Dan Nicksich officiating at Vanville Church of Christ, 11 Clasic Vanville Road, Martinsburg, WV. Interment will be at Rosedale Cemetery
