Obituary for William Joseph Meyer

William J. Meyer, 74, of Martinsburg, passed away on April 8, 2018 at home. Bill was born August 20th, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Matthew Meyer and Helen Voss Meyer. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Meyer, and one sister, Marilyn Janota.
Bill was an exceptional athlete who loved sports. A two-time All-Ohio Athletic conference selection in basketball, Bill played for Hiram College, where he was the first and only player in the school’s history to be selected in the NBA draft. After being drafted in the 11th round to the New York Knickerbockers in 1965, he played with the 1967-68 American Basketball Association (ABA) champions, the Pittsburgh Pipers. Following his professional basketball career, he found additional success in a long career in sales. Beyond his love of basketball, he was a music enthusiast who enjoyed attending concerts with his many friends. He loved traveling, and he was a devoted athletic fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Panthers. Bill also loved animals, especially many cherished family pets, including three tropical birds.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Meyer, one daughter, Sheryl Cabellos (Jean), of Ashburn, Virginia; one son, Mark Meyer (Samantha), of Martinsburg, five grandchildren, Patrick and Alyssa Cabellos, Megan, Hallie, and William Meyer, and two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Maxwell Cabellos.
A celebration of life will be held for friends and family to gather in his memory at 1:00 PM on April 29th at Lakes Recreation Center, 44078 Cheltenham Circle, Ashburn, Virginia.
